Been a pretty busy couple of months for me. Doing a lot of recording, mixing, re-dedicating myself to learning the mixing craft, video shoots, and just plain nine-to-five-ing. Also been taking care of a lot of business stuff so that 2012 can start off smooth once it hits. Not that I’m taking off focusing on the rest of 2011, but its just that right now I’ve set myself up for 2012 to be “The Year of ‘Tah”. Finishing 2011 strong is a prerequisite though, and I think that is going to...

Ok, I know I am to do another installment of my Gear Series, but I gotta deviate from it for a minute. I haven't just really blogged about things lately because I've been either keeping things under wraps, don't want to be concerned about things, or just being careful of what I have to write in MY blog (its a shame, isn't it?). Anyway this should be an interesting second half of the year to me as a lot of things could be changing. Such as job, scenery, music, and business. All those are in the...

My last post was about my beatmaking gear and since then I've added the M-Audio Axiom 61 1st Generation MIDI Keyboard Controller. So far I love it, but just hate the fact that its the 1st Generation model. After looking at the G2 models I think that is what I'm gonna go for in the next couple of months, plus I may just get the 49-key keyboard to kinda save room on the production centre. I love the Akai MPK models, but for what I do the Axiom G2 is definitely a better fit...which actually segues...

Different beatmakers have their specific weapon of choice. Its really not a “which one is the best” deal, but more so “which one is best FOR YOU” kinda deal. Whether it’s Software vs. Hardware, in the box vs. out the box, MIDI vs. Straight Audio, and of course two tracking vs. tracking out (word to the 2Track Assassin, Fathom 9) there’s really no right way of making a beat. And to be honest with you at the end of the day, the only question that remains is: is the beat dope or not? These have...
At a hip-hop showcase at the Center for Southern Folklore a few weeks ago, a microphone was handed into the crowd, and a few of the aspiring artists there as fans took turns with their own freestyle verses.
The best of the bunch, by far, came from Tim "Royal'T TopMC" Love, a hulking 19-year-old who charmed the crowd with a flow that was warm, easeful, and engaging.
I'd met Royal'T earlier in the evening, when he was passing out flyers for a show he was promoting the next night at downtown's...

Its commonplace to say that "Hip Hop has no rules", which to a degree, can be deemed factual. Yet, in one case, a certain rule MUST be followed. You can be the dopest emcee/rapper that have ever graced the landscape of the Hip Hop Universe, you can have sold over 20 million records independently, you can be the artist that has the most followers on twitter, I don't care what kind of accolades you have to prove that you are a force to be reckoned with, but if you can't rock a show...
I’ve done both sides of studio engineering: The professional/commercial studio engineering and the home studio engineering. And for what it’s worth some artists may be better off sticking with those who do home recording. I really feel that if some of the people I’ve come across had to deal with professional studio engineering, they wouldn’t survive in the industry. From experience, I’ve dealt with terrible punctuality, artists not being prepared, money issues,...

Had a random chat with a fellow emcee this weekend and we hit on a topic that we both had the same feelings about, emcee etiquette. I know that sounds weird and all, but to a point there is a way about doing things. Now we aren't talking about how to rip a mic or whatnot, but something else. What is meant by that is when other people slick "insert" themselves into an artist's project. Like if you tell someone you're working on something and they'll come back with...
This is a debate I've had with several other artists and consumers of the arts. For some it’s a no brainer when it comes to which one is more important. I'd say after talking to people about it, I'd say its 47% Quality to 53% Quantity. It doesn't surprise me either to be honest with you and in this day and time I'm liable to side with those on the Quantity side of things. Back then, pre-innanet days, of course it was unheard of to flood the masses with product. ...
MaxPtah has also made a name for himself on the mic and behind the production boards. These hip-hop vets came together and recorded the album Listen!!, which showcases their rhyming and beatmaking skills.

MaxPtah, has been a mainstay of the Memphis underground hip-hop community for years. Originally in the group Pirana U, Ptah has come into his own over the years as a solo artist and producer for several hip-hop artists such as the Iron Mic Coalition. His latest EP, Absolute Zero, showcases the maturation of this Memphis hip-hop vet while also hinting at his future growth.
The first track is an instrumental which segues into “Welcome to The…” featuring Voldo and SavSola. Ptah...
Who else can totally identify with this vid and song? LOL, I can seeing that I've spent many a dollar on wax and have no plans of stopping.

"Confessions Of A Vinyl Addict" is the fun, free wheeling ode to all of us crate diggin', vinyl sifting "pretentious assholes" known as record collectors, performed by Empee and MaxPtah...

LOL, talk about a nightmare! The premise behind this low-budget, yet highly entertaining excursion is basically some extremely un-lucky cat gettin' got...
